Forum success and evaluation

Evaluation
The forum was a great event with many positive and high rating evaluations. The most popular presenters were Todd Hutchison and Assistant Commissioner Wayne Gregson. We had nearly 80 registrations and a great number of TAFEWA library staff who attended.

Host college
Midland campus did a great job of hosting the event. Ralph and Julia's team were absolutely fantastic in organising the event. There were also many colleges this year that were generous with incentives for show bags etc.

Gold Sponsors
We also had some great gold class sponsorship from Ebsco, Ex Libris, Proquest and WestOne.

Photos
Some not so bad photos available on Picasa

Feedback
Some feedback stated that morning tea and afternoon tea should be held sacred for networking, so having James Taylor during this time was a mistake as he definitely deserved a better time slot. Feedback from one of presenters indicated that we should include the raffle times in the brochure and have the raffles after a break as further incentive to come back on time.

If you have any feedback or issues you would like to raise - please do so with Kiah Rogers - Kiah.Rogers@centralwest.wa.edu.au as the chair of the LRSN Client Services subcommitte.

Thanks to everyone for their participation and involvement for a great day!

Library Camp 3 October 2009

Sandy's notes from Library Camp
Please also refer to Kathryn Greenhill's wrap up

The venue at East Perth campus turned out to be a good choice for the Library Camp this year although the turnout was a little lower than expected as it was on a Saturday. The event went really well and we had about 70 or so people. I think some people preferred this to the usual 90 odd people as everyone felt more comfortable about contributing and taking part.

Seeing Michael Stephens in action was also a treat. Michael reported on a survey project that he is involved in that is looking at the impact of the 23 things professional development program. Michael in very interested in knowing what happens after the program and wants to delve into why 20% of respondents said there no impact.

I also thought it quite enlightening to hear so many people talk about failures and being open about them. The fact is that we only learn from our mistakes so we need to be honest about them.

Murdoch Uni staff went through their version which is ’14 things – a walkthrough’

This program is now specifically designed for the academic focus and geared towards academic staff and postgrad students. Sites referred to include Creative Commons, Zotero, Connotea, Citeulike, RSS, Gmail, Firefox, Google Scholar, Wikis, Delicious and Libx.
What they learnt
- Short is sweet
- Involve staff from all areas
- Allowing for networking during breaks
- Offering incentives or rewards
- IT need to be on board to support the teaching program

Question/Answer with Michael Stephens
Tame the Web
Next was a question and answer session with Michael Stephens and lead to discussions about the next big things:
- Google Wave – relates to real time communication
- Vanity Feeds
- Tiny Chat
- Evernote
- Google Side Wiki

Some things that came up were:
- How do we trust all of our information to social media spaces
  • o Well its time to backup in case we lose valuable information and ensuring transferability
- Gartner report
  • o Gartner has produced a report on what the world will be like in 2018
- Google searching
  • o Being aware that algorithms are at play in the way we search
- Semantic Web/Web 3.0
  • o Example of semantic web is the layering effect, for instance, there are new navigational guides for travel information so you could be walking along 5th avenue in New York and bubbles of information on your hand held internet device indicates where the train stations and any buildings or tourist attractions of note and this requires more accuracy than GPS
  • o Live@edu pilot project – students in web industry work in teams collaboratively in this social space and they can create/share mockups, templates etc

Tale of two blogs
Joint presentation by CSIRO and Water Corporation and their approach to creating an informative blog for their organisations. Both had technical issues that precluded an internet blog so they are all internally based and some do not have RSS because some blogs are hosted internally.

Internet Censorship
Presented by Amy Hightower

Informative session on the federal government’s proposed mandatory internet filtering. This project includes several areas, the first being prohibited material which is X and R rated 18+ and offensive material. This does not necessarily mean illegal content but the list the government is using contains prohibited material. There is also a supposed blacklist included in the new censorship.

The educational sector uses dynamic filtering which is child safe which is a 2nd layer or protection. The prohibited list is managed by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) that Senator Conroy has responsibility for.

The blacklist is a secret list selected by ACMA but is immune to freedom of information requests. However, this list was leaked in March 2009 and contains sites added accidently such as sites for a dental practice and veterinary clinic. Unfortunately, these companies and organisations added by accident have no recourse for financial loss as their sites were blocked. There was some consensus though that the filtering will be ultimately ineffective to stop the circulation of child pornography.

Library Dreaming

The last session was a joint session on 3 topics
1. Outrageous, impractical ideas for libraries
2. What will the library of 2019 look like?
3. What do we need to stop doing so we can do other things in the future?

Outrageous

- Download ebooks or any titles from library catalogue
- DVDs on demand – get them 2 at a time
- Homebound service
- Access to streaming music databases
- Libraries open 24/7 but not staff them
- Open access journals
- Abolish digital rights management
- Human intervention internet filtering
- Australian libraries sharing resources
- Educate our managers better
- Increased broadband speed

What staff and resources do we want?
- Dedicated IT team
- Decent library management system
  • o integrates with other systems
  • o provides decent reports
  • o handles digital formats
  • o catalogues books automatically
  • o personal and customisable catalogue profile
  • o tags
  • o ‘you might also be interested in’ section
- Get universities to teach us what we need
- Spacious and flexible library and community spaces

2019 view
- Collaborative space – dedicated space for collaborative work and getting the community engaged
- Versatile/flexible spaces – adaptable to what is required
- Wireless that works and is free to the user
- Green and sustainable thinking
- Well laid out and displayed directions/locations

What are we going to drop?
- Due back dates
- Cataloguing
- More cataloguing of location information
- Self service enhancements
- Change balance of what we order and invite clients to order

Update 8/10/09

What should library administrators know about technology?
Well, Roy Tennant has the top 10 things available from TechEssence.

I liked No.10 - 'The single biggest threat to any technology project is political in nature'. Roy also states to be prepared to fail. This theme was raised at Library Camp, that we need to accept that we will fail sometimes but we can only learn from our mistakes.

Heard of Jamendo?
A new open source music site - Jamendo.

Sirsi Dynix being sued by Queens Borough Library

Wow, I was really surprised to read this blog post from Librarian in Black. I didn't think this sort of thing happened at all but Queens Borough Libraries in NY is suing SirsiDynix for breach of contract etc. How wrong could you be.....

The original article is from Library Journal. The underlying issue relates to when Sirsi merged with Dynix. Bit of deja vu for us.

Uniquely Singapore - the National Library

Well folks on my recent and very short jaunt overseas to Singapore - I took a quick look at the Singapore National Library. It's a gloriously modern building with bright spaces and multiple levels with heaps of glass. Views from all around. You can even the see the building from afar and I spotted it from the taxi entering the city and somehow knew it was the library.
